Feedback From Stakeholder Meetings
Kansas City Area

Kansas City (June 6):

• Approximately 18 stakeholders attended from: BC/BS, OSH, Crittenton, BesCare, KCSL, ResCare, Heart of America Family Services, WDAG, Eagle, Arch. KCK, KVC.

Questions and Comments:

• Preventive health care for children must be maintained.
• Changes with Larned State Hospital and Osawatomie State Hospital mentioned but nothing about Rainbow - will it close?
• Services for the blind need to be improved.
• More children may come into custody as result of Family Preservation cuts.
• Unintended outcomes these cuts will cause.
• HCBS elimination of transportation will hurt Wyandotte County consumers who do not have own transportation - consumers will miss doctor appointments, may have to go to nursing homes, etc.
• Reduction in CIF will adversely affect child care.
• Increase in prescription co-pays will adversely affect consumers' ability to get medications.

Kansas City (July 12, 2002):

Discussion

• Never thought of SRS as duplicating services.
• Talk to universities about evaluation of programs can get funds for programs for immediate source of income and only lasts for 3 or 4 years.
• Internship with KU and UMKC to help provide services. Is there a model existing.
• Kauffman - must focus on at risk. Irene is familiar with there requirements.
• Casey and Robert Woods Foundations.
• Cerner Foundation, Stowers Foundation.
• Pharmacies have foundations would they be interested.

Issues

• Really want to protect Family Preservation.
• Heard USD 500 is developing Family Advocate Para's and volunteers.
• PD and FE waivers - no transportation.
• Faith based initiatives Stowers Foundation EOF has vans.
• UG's D of C brought in someone to teach life skills.
• JJA money to U.G. Fund.
• School Violence Prevention program. Kaufmann money.

Things Community Does Not Want Cut

• Family Preservation.
• Supports for those leaving with NFMH facilities (SPMI).
• Child care grants.
• APS (no one else in community investigating). We do not put enough emphasis on aged population. Capacity building. Elderly population is burgeoning.
• Do Not Keep Hospice and Care Attendant from terminally ill waivers. Need both not one or the other to stay in home.
