Independent Living provides youth with a permanency goal of self-sufficiency will
be provided an individualized transitional living program designed to assist them
when they move out of foster care as young adults. Transitional plans include
having an adult mentor to counsel, encourage, and help the youth as they assume
adult responsibilities. Children growing up in their own homes have role models
who help them develop into responsible, independent adults. Children growing up
in foster care may move frequently, may have interrupted education and may be
reacting to their own emotional needs or to abuse and neglect experienced in their
own home. This program is designed to fill in some of the gaps that occur because
of the out-of-home placement and help adolescents learn skills they need for successful
transition to adulthood. |
