Topeka residents with blindness or impaired vision don't lack things to do. Three support groups and one class, targeting different interests, meet each month at the RCBVI in Topeka. The Visually impaired Persons (VIP) Support Group focuses primarily on age related macular degeneration and is attended by older individuals. They have a different speaker each month, usually a physician, service provider, or motivational speaker. After the presentations, those interested can socialize at lunch and play various games. The Foresight Group was originally established for visually impaired persons with diabetes. Facilitators soon realized that many of the complications of diabetes are often associated with aging. Each month a topic related to complications of diabetes and aging is discussed. Emphasis is placed on coping skills and available assistive devices. The Assistive Technology (AT) Users Group of Kansas is comprised of blind or visually impaired persons who use specialized programs and equipment to access computers at work and at home. This monthly group hosts teleconferences which allow individuals outside the Topeka area to participate. A specific assistive technology topic is discussed each month. In alternate months, hands-on workshops are conducted. The Topeka Association for the Visually Impaired (TAVI) conducts its monthly meetings at the RCBVI. Programs and activities are provided that target a wide range of interests. Activities include music, speakers, potluck events and occasional outings into the community. A weekly Braille class is conducted at the SRS Topeka Service Center for anyone who wishes to learn or improve their Braille skills. This allows the instructor to reach more Braille students more often. In-home Braille instruction is also available. We are constantly on the lookout for ways to bring together individuals who have interests in common. When we find them, we try to find ways to share our interests, learn from one another, and have fun as a bonus. |
