On July 11,
2003, KSBVI initaited a training day for Ophthalmology Residents from
Kansas University School of Medicine. This program was one of the
first of its kind in the United States. Yearly training between KSBVI
and Ophthalmology Residents at KUMC will again be presented at the
Rehabilitation Center for the Blind (RCBVI) on July 16, 2004. Each of the participants agreed this training was of a great value to them and they would be confident in making future patient referrals to the RCBVI. A half-day follow-up training was provided to the doctors at KUMC School of Medicine on February 20, 2004. Background: Following two years of "education-focused" contact with physicians throughout the state by our Program Consultant, Dr. Abio Sokari, KUMC School of Medicine determined that their ophthalmology doctors would benefit from "blindness training" at the RCBVI, and that this type of training would be established as part of their education curriculum. The KUMC physicians were presented information about each of the programs provided by KSBVI as well as vocational rehabilitation education eligibility criteria, goals of employment, "hands-on" work in white cane mobility travel, preparation of and eating a meal under various vision loss simulators and work with braille and computers with voice access and screen enlargement options. |
