Abio Sokari,
M.D., Ph.D., joined the KSBVI Team as a Program Consultant specializing
in Pathophysiology in January 2001. Dr. Sokari has a prestigious background
in medicine, surgery, research and teaching spanning over 25 years.
He earned his Ph.D. in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University
of Glasgow, Scotland, and also has an M.D. Degree from the University
of Ibadan, Nigeria, which is Dr. Sokari's homeland. Dr. Sokari is
recognized as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Health in London, England.
Dr. Sokari also teaches at the University of Missouri at Kansas City
(UMKC), specializing in anatomy, chemistry, and biological science. Dr. Sokari regularly consults with peer medical professionals, Diabetic Specialists, Ophthalmologists/Optometrists and other Internal Medical Specialists concerned with diabetic complications experienced by Kansans. As the "Ambassador" for KSBVI, Dr. Sokari also promotes the services and programs at the RCBVI to a wide range of possible client referral sources. Dr. Sokari also facilitates a monthly low vision/diabetic support group held at the RCBVI and also provides in-depth training in the field of maintaining health to older Kansans who experience blindness or vision loss in monthly Kan-SAIL Outreaches conducted across the state. Dr. Sokari is also blind as a result of degenerative myopia and is a graduate of the RCBVI. In his own words, Dr. Sokari explains why he has joined forces with KSBVI. "I came to the Rehabilitation Center and within four weeks, it turned my life around. I thought I would try to give back." "I realized that few people who are visually impaired are referred to the Center...if people in need were referred a lot earlier, they could do a lot to improve themselves." "Part of my job now is to inform as many people as possible about the services and programs available at the RCBVI and to reach out and assist the blind and low vision of Kansas to gain or maintain the independence and success waiting for them, if only they learn the skills of blindness, just like I did." |
