The "Robert Davis" Story

by Robert Davis,
RCBVI Graduate
As a newly blinded person, I was referred to RCBVI by my counselor. Not knowing what to expect I was reluctant to make the trip, but I met a client there and his situation was very similar to mine. We started telling jokes the first day I was there and have been friends ever since. Never having met a blind person before, I thought the only prerequisite for being blind was to be blind. Once at the Center I learned that there are different techniques for living as an independent blind person.

After completing my independent living classes, I returned to the Center numerous times for further training. This included additional Braille classes as well as computer training.

All the experiences I encountered at the Center have been beneficial. The independent living classes allowed me to continue my college education while living alone. In conjunction, the Braille, typing and computer training I received enabled me to be competitive in the classroom. Also, while at the Center I was exposed to working with readers. However, my experience with readers in college was totally different than my experience at the Center. At the Center we had dependable readers. When I was attending Emporia State, I finally met a dependable reader, so I married her.

I have continued to use all the skills learned at the Center in everyday life. I learned to mark food and clothes so there were no surprises. The cooking techniques I learned at the Center are a part of my daily life. Also the technical training opened new avenues for my college education. When I arrived at the Center I had never even used a typewriter. However, by the completion of my first session, I learned to type and use a voice program to create and edit documents.

I would recommend the Center to other blind people and to people that are going blind. The Center exposed me to other blind people that were living normal productive lives. Before the Center I had no idea what blind people could accomplish. Well, I found that blind people can do just about anything a sighted person can, it just takes different techniques. Since my training at the Center I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing and a Master's in Business Administration. Currently I am in the process of starting my own computer training business.
