Meet Our New Staff

 

Photograph of Jan Woolverton Janet came to RCBVI on March 3, 2003 from the Topeka Area Office, where she was part of Project Success, a program designed to work with high-risk high school students. The focus of her job was to help students develop work skills through part-time job experiences. Prior to Project Success, Janet was a Rehabilitation Specialist I with the Career Development Center, performing vocational assessments, community job tryouts and placement. Janet has a background in education and especially enjoys working with transition students. At the RCBVI, Janet serves as our Community Job Tryout and Transition Specialist.

Mervat joined the RCBVI on May 19, 2003 as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Instructor. Mervat is originally from Egypt. She has a Bacherlor's of Nursing Degree from Cairo University with over 16 years experience as a head nurse in medical, surgical, pediatric and ophthalmology departments at King Saud University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. She also earned a Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility from Western Michigan University. We are very pleased to have Mervat join our rehabilitation team. Photograph of Mervat Badawi

Photograph of Nannette Easterling Nannette began employment at RCBVI as an O&M Instructor in training on July 21, 2003. In addition to her O&M duties, Nannette provides assistance and support services to RCBVI instructors in Independent Living Skills (ILS) training and support for Kan-SAIL Community Outreaches. Nannette cross-trains with instructors to provide core curriculum in areas of independent living for clients seeking competitive employment. She was previously employed as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor II in the Overland Park SRS Office for just over four years. Her caseload included individuals who were deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, blind and visually impaired. Nannette holds a Kansas Quality Assurance Screening Interpreting Level of 5/5 (interpreting/transliterating) which is the highest state level possible. She has had extensive graduate level training in issues related to hearing loss and vision loss.

Brett was hired as one of our Computer Instructors on October 12, 2003. Previously he worked for SRS Health Care Policy as the manager of their website. Brett has also worked at the Manhattan Public Library in their assistive technology lab. Brett is not new to RCBVI. He was a former student and a volunteer for our Mentoring Program. He has an Associates Degree in Computer Information Systems and comes to us with a wealth of instructional and technical skills. Photograph of Brett Sanders

Phtograph of Sandra Andrews Sandra joined the Kansas Seniors Achieving Independent Living Program on October 26, 2003 as a Senior Specialist working with older Kansans who experience blindness or low vision to assist them to regain or maintain their independence and self-sufficiency within their home communities. Sandra has been working in the field of rehabilitation since 1985 and has provided direct services to people who are low vision, blind, deaf and/or hard of hearing. She is a Certified Sign Language Interpreter.

Chuck joined the KSBVI team on January 18, 2004 as a Program Consultant II. Chuck's major responsibility will be to plan and coordinate job placement activity for rehabilitation clients who are visually impaired, blind and deaf-blind who are having difficulties in finding employment through conventional placement resources. Chuck will work with clients to identify barriers to employment. Chuck comes to us from SRS Health Care Policy where he was a Management Systems Analyst. Chuck holds Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from KSU.

Photograph of Michael Byington Michael began employment at the RCBVI as a Rehabilitation Support Worker I in our Dormitory on February 15, 2004 where he works with clients to practice independent living skills learned at the RCBVI. Michael holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education, Speech and Psychology Education and a Master's in Communications with an emphasis in Drama Therapy from Kansas State University. Michael is also a graduate of the RCBVI.
