Kansas Seniors Achieving Independent Living Skills (Kan-SAIL) is a program of the Kansas Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Its purpose is to provide services to increase the independent living skills and to improve the quality of life of older persons experiencing severe vision impairment or blindness. Kan-SAIL is specifically interested in locating and serving culturally diverse populations.
Kan-SAIL provides instruction in adaptive techniques for cooking, housekeeping, sewing, and other activities of daily living. The Kan-SAIL staff can also provide low vision aids. Staff can help with development of support groups that bring together individuals to provide information, socialization, and recreation. They can instruct individuals in small groups in the community. They can also receive instruction in their homes. To qualify for instruction by Kan-SAIL, persons must be 55 years of age or older and experiencing severe vision loss. Severe vision loss means that individuals are not able to read standard print with best correction. Standard print means material printed in the size seen in such publications as newspapers and magazines. Best correction means when wearing the best glasses or contacts that can be prescribed by their doctor. Agencies, care givers, and friends of persons with impaired vision can request help from Kan-SAIL by calling toll free 1-800-547-5789. Topeka residents call the Kansas Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired at 785-296-3311.
