Disability Determination Services (DDS) makes disability and blindness determinations for the U.S. Social Security Administration on most Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims filed or reviewed in Kansas. DDS also reviews the cases of individuals who already receive benefits, in order to determine if they continue to qualify for benefits; conducts hearings in cases where SSDI or SSI eligibility is found to have ceased; and makes Medicaid eligibility determinations for individuals who do not meet the financial requirements for SSI. DDS also refers claimants who could benefit from other services to the Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) program and to the program for Children with Special Health Care Needs in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. In Kansas, these determinations result in approximately $33 million in monthly payments to 54,130 individuals with disabilities and their dependents. (December 1999 data) To submit a claim for Social Security benefits, please contact your local Social Security Office. Funding for DDS is 99% federal. For more information on Social Security benefits, access the Social Security Benefit Information Publications web site. |
