Program Update

Fort Riley Awards Bid: On April 26, 2006 the State Licensing Agency (Kansas Rehabilitation Services, Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Business Enterprise Program) was awarded the food services contract at Fort Riley. After having a signed teaming agreement for eleven years, the efforts of Food Services, Inc. of Gainesville (FSIG) and the BEP have resulted in the Army awarding its food services contract to the SLA. This $4.4 million dollar contract will start June 1, 2006 for one year with three one year extensions ending May 31, 2010. The contract is authorized to grow to $9.5 million dollars as additional troops are stationed at Ft. Riley. This contract includes one full food service cafeteria and three dining halls. More dining halls are being constructed to feed the influx of additional troops in the near future. Elliott Smith, Kansas Vending Facility Manager, will be paying $25,000 per year in set-aside fees to BEP for the matching of federal dollars to help fund the BEP.

Richard Henning, KVF Manager, died April 4, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was 50 years old. Richard had been a manager of Sizzler, Perkins, and Sirloin Stockade restaurants before entering the Business Enterprise Program April, 1997. Richard was a KVF manager for nine years. He managed the vending services for the Wyandotte County Courthouse, the Kansas City Bulk Mail Facility, the Lawrence SRS Office, the Lawrence Independent Living Center, and other smaller locations in Lawrence. Highway Vending Update: The BEP continues to work with SRS Purchasing to identify additional prospective building contractors in the Junction City area to build the vending shelters west of Junction City on Interstate 70. Two Rivers Vending out of Salina was awarded the servicing of the highway shelters located at the McPherson and Bennington rest areas on I-135 and the shelters at the rest areas at Solomon on I-70, effective July 1st. This will add to the assessment fund with Two Rivers paying a commission to the BEP. Phillip Carr was awarded the Wichita Post Office Distribution Center and will be moving to Wichita once he sells his house in Gypsum. He will continue to service the Salina area rest areas until July 1, 2006.

5-Star Vending out of Manhattan will be placing a soda machine and snack machine in the Junction City SRS office, and a soda machine in the Abilene SRS office. They will be paying a commission to the BEP assessment fund.
