When I came on board with BEP, there were two book-keepers, Leura Kidd was the lead book-keeper and prepared statements and such, while I for example, worked with payroll, payments and maintained the sales journal. At this time all the records were in large very thick and heavy ledgers and were maintained and calculated by hand which took a lot of time.

Bob Sheldon was the director and Ken Rugge was one of the program consultants, they were already located on the Topeka state hospital grounds, however the book-keepers had an office at the state office building in downtown Topeka. Our office was with the Finance Department and one of their accountants supervised the book-keepers. There were also more managers in those days, if my memory serves me correctly. Sandra Terry, Don Wistuba, Kathy Dawson and Debbie Brummer are some of the managers that are still active in the program today. Of course there were many others I remember working with who have passed away, and still others that came into the program but did not stay long. Over the years there have been many changes, the biggest as far as its effect on my job was in the early 1990's when the records were first put on computer. At the same time, Leura Kidd retired, and the program went to only one book-keeper. At the same time they changed the job title to Accounting Specialist, which to me always seemed a little more descriptive. There were at least three computer programs that we went through before settling on the current Peachtree program. All of them had their quirks and disadvantages, but you learned to work with them. There were also several moves to different buildings on the Topeka state hospital grounds. Some of which had some very interesting history behind them. This was nice in that I got to meet lots of new and interesting people, especially during the time we shared a building with KIB (the workshop where many products were made by the blind employees). I can honestly say that I have enjoyed working with everyone involved with BEP over my 24 years with the program. I hope to see everyone from time to time down the long and winding road.” Venita
