Capacity Building

What is Capacity Building?

"Capacity building" means different things
to different organizations.

Building capacity is essential for any long-term strategy of sustainable development. In short, capacity building is the sum of efforts of community based organizations to nurture, enhance and utilize the skills and capabilities of people and institutions at multiple levels -- so that community based organizations can better progress towards sustainable development. At the basic conceptual level, building capacity is about empowering people and organizations to solve their problems, rather than attempting to apply a quick fix to real problems. When capacity building is successful, the result is more effective people and institutions that are better able to provide products and services on a sustainable basis.

On June 6, 2001, t he QA/QE Partnership Work Group, with several guests, met to accomplish a special project. This group consisted of 21 Community Developmental Disability Organization - (CDDOs) representatives, three independent community service provider representatives, three advocacy group representatives, and six Disability and Behavioral Health Services/Community Supports and Services representatives. The charge for this special project was: to lay out the road map to guide development and implementation by Councils of Community Members of local capacity building plans, pursuant to the recent amendment to the DD Reform Act (part [e] of the amendment language).

The following documents on this web page reflect the Capacity Building journey of Kansas CDDOs.
