Development of the MHSIP Project

MHSIP About Us

The Mental Health Statistics Improvement Project (MHSIP) was organized to help consumers of mental health services evaluate the quality and effectiveness of different treatments and providers. The purpose of MHSIP is to give consumers the information they need to make wise choices and advocate for improvement.

A national task force of mental health consumers; representatives of federal, state and local agencies; advocacy groups; researchers and policy analysts has worked on this project since 1993. They reviewed relevant background literature, and also enlisted the help of focus groups. This work resulted in their recommending the development of a "mental health report card." The task force concluded that this "report card" should be:

  • Consumer oriented
  • Focused mainly on serious mental illness
  • Value driven
  • Research based
  • Outcome targeted
  • Cost considerate

A similar group of Kansas stake holders is working to make this goals a reality in our state. The national and Kansas MHSIP task forces recognize the importance of including people who receive mental health services in significant roles at each stage. Therefore, consumers continue to be active participants in every step of the process.
