What is Evidence Based Practice?
Evidence Based Practices are those practices which have been researched in the field, and have demonstrated very specific positive outcomes with very specific practice interventions.

Continuum of Research Evidence
Research is viewed on a continuum, one end of the continuum representing those practices that have excellent outcomes demonstrated by rigorous research, and at the other end of the continuum are those practices that have very little research, yet represent important value/s within the Recovery and Community Mental Health systems.

Fidelity
Evidence Based Practices that have been identified with the most rigorous research have very specific fidelity measures that need to be practiced in order to continue to be considered an Evidence Based Practice. Fidelity is a term used in the EBP field to represent a practice specific procedure or construct. In the six EBPs currently available with tool kits, (Illness Self Management and Recovery, Medication Algorithms, Assertive Community Treatment, Supported Employment, Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment, Family Psycho-education) fidelities for both the direct service practitioner and the administrative organization are identified. These fidelity measures must then be incorporated, practiced, and measured within the organization in order to produce the intended results. Research has demonstrated that higher levels of fidelity are related to better outcomes.

Evidence Based thinking reflects an approach that attempts to ensure that treatment works. Interventions chosen utilize research that links the specific intervention with the desired outcome/s. In order to practice this approach to treatment planning one must take into consideration the desire of the consumer, the efficacy, and effectiveness of the possible interventions, skills of the practitioner and administrative organization of the agency. EBP essentially utilizes research evidence that links a particular intervention with a desired outcome, taking into consideration the desire and values of the consumer and the family, while evaluating the EBP intervention fidelity as an integral part of the practice.

Outcomes
Outcome measurements used in Evidence Based Practices vary, however most strive to set outcomes that are qualitatively higher than just reducing symptoms, and include measures that assess the ability to live, work, and learn within cities, towns and communities. Essentially identifying outcomes that measure the degree to which one is achieving integration into the fabric of society.
