September 2, 2005 - SRS READY TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR HURRICANE AFFECTED FAMILIES

Topeka - Families who have made their way to Kansas from the hurricane affected Gulf Coast can now receive assistance from the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. “ We understand that many families have made their way to Kansas to stay with relatives,” said Governor Kathleen Sebelius. “ Some of those families have also brought unrelated children whose parents stayed behind. Our state stands prepared to do everything possible to help provide these families with the services they need to recover.”

SRS is in the process of issuing instructions to staff for providing access to benefits such as cash assistance, food stamps, medical care and child care. “ Persons arriving in the state will be treated as though they are Kansas residents and will have access to benefits if otherwise eligible,” said SRS Secretary Gary Daniels. SRS may waive verification of certain eligibility requirements until such time that this information can be reasonably obtained. The key thrust will be to provide benefits quickly as a measure to stabilize these families.

SRS is also working closely with its community partners. Community support networks such as the community mental health centers, are positioned to assist refugees arriving in Kansas. SRS has activated the Kansas All Hazards Behavioral Health Program which links with the Red Cross and community mental health centers in providing disaster related services. Linkages are being made with the community developmental disabilities organization to provide related supports.

Refugees can access SRS services by calling the Toll-Free Number 1-888-369-4777. They can also access information through the SRS website at www.srskansas.org.
