September 26, 2003 - SRS awarded $5.1 million high performance bonus Topeka Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) Secretary Janet Schalansky announced today that the agency has been awarded a $5.1 million high performance bonus for the states success with the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. The TANF program provides services for low-income Kansans. Services include employment assistance, subsidized child care, and cash assistance. SRS ranked fourth in the nation on employment successes such as finding and retaining employment, creating opportunities for job advancement, and increasing earnings. "We are pleased that Kansas has been recognized for its leadership in helping families resolve problems so they can gain employment and become independent," said Secretary Schalansky. Kansas is one of only nine states to receive the maximum possible bonus payment from the federal government. Other states receiving a maximum bonus include: Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia. "Kansas is among the leading performers in job entry and job retention," said Dr. Wade Horn, HHS Assistant Secretary for Children and Families. Bonus payments were based on positive TANF outcomes achieved between October 1, 2000 and September 30, 2001. The bonus will help SRS serve the increased number of families who have lost employment due to the economic downturn. During the past year, Kansas has experienced an 11 percent increase in persons receiving TANF assistance.
