November 7, 2000 - Secretary Schalansky names new director for Manhattan SRS area Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) Secretary Janet Schalansky today announced that Gregory A. Valentine, formerly the director of Administrative Services for the Shawnee Community Mental Health Center in Topeka, has been named the new area director for the 17-county Manhattan SRS Area. Mr. Valentine brings 14 years of management experience to this important leadership position with the agency. At the mental health center, he moved up from crisis case manager to coordinator of crisis services and then to director of crisis services and substance abuse recovery programs before taking the position as director of administrative services. In his last position at the mental health center, he managed a multi-million dollar budget. Before work at the mental health center, Mr. Valentine did a master’s level practicum for SRS in the Commission of Mental Health and Developmental Services. In Manhattan, he takes over for Flordie Pettis, who retired as area director earlier this year. Secretary Schalansky said Mr. Valentine will continue the good customer service provided by the agency under Mrs. Pettis. She also said his knowledge of mental health and substance abuse recovery systems will be an asset in dealing with similar issues for SRS. "Greg has the administrative experience needed to run an area office, including financial, policy, and program development," Secretary Schalansky said. "And he also has the program experience that will help him in working with our customers." Mr. Valentine holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Washburn University and a master’s of social work from Kansas University. He also continues to serve as social work representative to the state’s Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. The Manhattan SRS Area has 340 employees and manages local offices in 17 Kansas counties. They include Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Geary, Jewell, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Nemaha, Ottawa, Pottawatomie, Republic, Riley, Saline, Wabaunsee, and Washington.
