October 17, 2000 - SRS to hold public forums on Child Abuse and Neglect and Foster Care/Adoption in Salina

Topeka---The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) will hold a public forum on Wednesday, October 25. Defining Child Abuse and Neglect will be held from 7-9 pm at the Kansas Wesleyan University, 100 E. Claflin Street, Peters Hall Auditorium, Room 201, Salina. The purpose of the forum is to discuss how to define child abuse and neglect, and determine when a child is at risk and should be removed from their home. All social service providers, court officials, school personnel, parents, foster parents, and anyone else concerned about the well-being of children in our society are encouraged to attend. Information gathered at the forum will be used by SRS to make recommendations to the legislature regarding child abuse and neglect laws, regulations, and policies.

A second public forum, Adoption and Foster Care Update, will be held on Wednesday, November 1 from 1-2:30 pm, at the Salina SRS Office, 901 Westchester Drive, Salina. SRS Secretary Janet Schalansky and Assistant Secretary Joyce Allegrucci will host the forum. All child welfare contractors, subcontractors, foster parents, school personnel, and court officials are invited to attend.

Any individual with a disability may request accommodation to participate in the forum by calling 785-368-8190 or 785-296-3271 at least two working days prior to the forum.
