This federally-funded program helps people who meet guidelines purchase home heating fuel and electricity. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS) administers the program.

Guidelines for the LIEAP program include an ability to demonstrate regular fuel payments and income level. Applicants must meet the following income guidelines:

Last winter, 30,131 Kansas households received LIEAP assistance. Most were disabled, elderly or unemployed people. The amount of assistance available under the LIEAP program vary according to household income, housing type, the type of fuel used, and utility rates.

In 1996, the average annual household benefit was $190.

Applications for LIEAP assistance will be mailed in January to persons who received assistance last year. Other interested households may request an application by calling toll-free 1-800-432-0043. Applications are also available at SRS offices across the state.

To qualify for LIEAP, applications must be received at local SRS offices by March 31.
