August 27, 1996 - Big changes in social service system will be topics during SRS's open meeting Wednesday in Lawrence What federal welfare reform means to low-income or disabled Kansans. Coming changes in the way home and community-based services are provided the frail elderly and persons with disabilities. And progress made in privatization of state adoption, family preservation and foster care services. These topics and others will be open for discussion when Rochelle Chronister, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, chairs the agency's quarterly Open Meeting on Wednesday, September 4 in Lawrence, beginning at 10 a.m. Held at the Lawrence SRS Office, 1901 Delaware St., the meeting will also feature Deputy Secretary Janet Schalansky and commissioners and directors of the department's major program areas. These include commissions on Income Support and Employment Preparation, Children and Families, Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Adult and Medical Services, and Rehabilitation Services. The Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and commissioners will also be available to answer questions. The
meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be connected by telephone
hook-up to the 11 other SRS Area Offices across the state. SRS officials
on site in Lawrence will be able to respond to questions and comments
from the SRS offices in Chanute, Emporia, Garden City, Hays, Topeka, Wichita,
