An update on progress made in the creation of the Kansas Youth Authority will be one focus of the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services' statewide Open Meeting. The quarterly meeting will be on Thursday, December 5 in the Chanute Area Office, 1500 West 7th Street, Chanute.

SRS Secretary Rochelle Chronister and Deputy Secretary Janet Schalansky will be on hand for the meeting. Chanute Area Director O.D. Sperry will serve as host.

The public is invited to attend the meeting in Chanute or take part via telephone hook-up in the 11 other SRS Area Offices across Kansas. Secretary Chronister, Deputy Secretary Schalansky, and members of the SRS Executive Committee, including SRS commissioners, will answer questions and hear concerns from the statewide audience.

The Open Meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and last until noon.

Beside Deputy Secretary Schalansky's update on progress made in the creation of the Kansas Youth Authority, Connie Hubbell, SRS Commissioner of Income Support and Employment Preparation Service, will provide information about the impact of federal welfare reform on Kansas.

Since federal welfare reform became law, SRS has been gathering information as quickly as possible determine the impact on public assistance recipients and programs in Kansas.

Other SRS commissioners will also be on hand to talk about highlights and innovations in their areas.

The public is invited to participate in the Open Meeting, either in person at the Chanute Area Office or by telephone hook-up in the other Area Offices. The other SRS Area Offices are in Hays, Garden City, Hutchinson, Wichita, Salina, Manhattan, Emporia, Lawrence, Olathe, and Kansas City. SRS Area Directors will host the meetings at each of these sites.
