TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES AT LSH!!!

* Staff Development Department provides multiple educational opportunities for LSH
employees.  Staff Development provides/coordinates continuing education and
in-service for LSH employees in a continuing effort to enhance employee performance.
All on-campus training activities are provided free of charge to employees of the hospital.
The Staff Development Library is available for educational research and training opportunities.
Psychiatric nursing clinical rotations are coordinated by Staff Development for several area
colleges/universities.  A complete listing of courses offered at LSH is available upon request by
calling (620) 285-4512.  The Staff Development Department is located in the Capper Building.

* Larned State Hospital provides on-site computer training that includes an 8 station computer lab.
Staying on the cutting edge of technology plays a major role when it comes to training our
employees on the use of computers and other information technology. Examples of classes
offered include Keyboarding, Introduction to Computers including E-mail, Advanced GroupWise,
Internet Use for Quality Care and Corel Office Applications.

* As a bonus, the Computer Cadre are staff members of LSH and can relate to everyday
computer problems/solutions. Major effort is made to ensure staff are trained and familiar
with the information technology available.

* Larned State Hospital sponsors a providership to offer Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)
approved through the Kansas State Board of Nursing! Continuing Education is also offered for
Social Workers, Psychologists, Physicians, Chemical Dependency Counselors, and
Activity Therapists! Many of the on-campus offerings also meet educational requirements
for other licenses/certifications of other professional staff employed on campus.

* Inservice opportunities are geared to specific performance improvement needs as identified
by the employee, the supervisor, administration or as required to address new policies,
procedures, or equipment processes.

* Larned State Hospital offers a two and a half day Hospital Wide Orientation for all new employees on
the first and third weeks each month.  In June of 2003, a fourth day of orientation was added, "Introduction to Documentation".  This will include an 8 hour session that will cover such topics as "Confidentiality and the Medical Record", "Legalities and Documenting the Treatment Process", and "Computerized Documentation".   In addition, Department Specific and Position Specific
Orientation is provided for each new employee.

* Larned State Hospital also offers on-campus career advancement opportunities for
nursing staff.  The entry level position of Mental Health Trainee is offered a  
one week Beginning Health Skills to be followed by extensive Position Specific
Orientation to be coordinated by the employee's supervisor. Within two years of employment,
the trainee is considered for acceptance into "Intermediate Health Skills" training.
This is the first level of the Mental Health Technician Program approved by the Kansas
State Board of Nursing. At the conclusion of the course, the employee is qualified for the
Mental Health Aide classification.
