State Security Program

State Security Hospital is a maximum security, 173-bed hospital that serves the state of Kansas for the
purpose of evaluating, treating and caring for such mentally ill persons as may be committed or ordered to
State Security Hospital by courts of criminal jurisdiction and/or transferred from the Department of Corrections.

Care and Treatment is provided for the patients, and they are returned to court for further legal disposition
whenever the relevant clinical and legal criteria are met.  Patients are transferred back to the Department of
Corrections when psychiatric care and treatment is completed (or whenever it is determined that psychiatric
care and treatment are not indicated).  Larned State Security Hospital is the only state facility that serves
the needs of the mentally ill who are referred from the Unified Judicial System and the Department of Corrections.

The primary objective and goals are to admit, evaluate, care for, treat and manage those patients committed
to the State Security Hospital under court orders for care, treatment and forensic evaluations.

The units on State Security Hospital each have a treatment team that provides psychiatric, medical,
psychological, nursing, social service, and activity therapy services to their clients.
Additional consultation services are also utilized.
