Larned, Kansas Enhancing Services: Empowering Patients & Families |
General Agency Information - Larned State Hospital
BACKGROUND:
Larned State Hospital consists of three distinct programs, Psychiatric Service Program, State Security Program and
Sexual Predator Treatment Program.
LSH is one of three state operated psychiatric facilities in Kansas.
Established in 1914 to provide care and
treatment for the mentally ill in the western part of the state, the
Hospital took on additional responsibilities with the
opening of State Security Hospital in 1939.
Created by a separate act of legislation, this unit was located at the
Hospital to be administered by LSH. Providing psychiatric services
for forensic cases, the Security Hospital was
legislated to admit patients from throughout the state.
Prior to 1960, the Hospital accommodated only adult patients, general
psychiatric and forensic; but beginning in 1966, treatment programs were
added for children, adolescents, the chemical dependent and security behavior
males.
Presently the Hospital operates three separate services with a licensed
capacity of 299.
Those areas are: Youth, Adult, Security and Security Behavior Services.
LSH maintains 28 major buildings on a 98 acre campus.
ACCREDITATION:
Larned State Hospital continues to strive to provide the best possible
care and treatment for patients admitted
to the facility. Using state of the art technology, and a comprehensive
and collaborative treatment team approach,
each patient’s treatment plan is individualized to fit the specific
needs of the patient. The quality of care provided by the
staff of Larned State Hospital was recognized by surveyors from the
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations during their
survey conducted in May of 2003 which resulted in re-accreditation of the
Hospital’s
programs. The Psychiatric Services program is also certified by the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
The goals of the
hospital, making people as independent as possible,
restoring patients to their optimum level of functioning, minimizing
patient length of stay, and remaining within budgetary resources are reflected
in the agency’s mission statement: “State of the art services provided by
caring and competent staff.”
EMPLOYEES:
Number of Full-Time Employees: 685
The Hospital operates on a treatment team basis, staffed by the following:
psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers,
nurses, licensed mental health technicians, lpn, mental health aides, activity
therapists, and physicians.
Examples of a few support services are: dietary, engineering, laundry,
auxiliary medical, clinical information
management, information resources, safety/security, and environmental
services.
Exciting careers are available periodically throughout the year and one would have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of consumers.
CONSUMERS:
The Psychiatric Service Program works closely with the
Community Mental Health Centers
while a Youth or Adult consumer is here.
This interaction helps ensure a successful discharge of each consumer.
The
State Security Program area covers the entire state. Security delivers
specialized mental health services to the consumer
committed by the District Court and to those transferred from the Kansas
Department of Corrections. Also included
in the State Security Hospital program are consumers accommodated as
non-forensic whose severe behavioral problems
have caused administrative transfers to the Security Behavior Unit
from any Kansas State mental health facility.
In 1994, the Kansas Legislature passed the Violent Sexual Predator Treatment Act (SB 525, L9, Chapter 316).
The Sexual Predator Treatment Program currently houses 90 + men on Dillon Building. These men have been judged to be a Sexual Predator by Kansas Law. The Residents are offered group and individual therapy as well as psycho-educational classes. They have the opportunity to participate in Activity Therapy classes, religious groups and in the Vocational Rehabilitation Program, which is a job training program.
