Larned State Hospital.....a Training Facility!
Did you know that Larned State Hospital has been training Music Therapy
Interns since 1965?
The National Association of Music Therapy (NAMT) gave approval in
June of 1965 for the
Larned State Hospital to be a clinically approved training site
for Music Therapy students.
Ray Glover and Ted Irwin were instrumental in acquiring this program
for the hospital.
In 1998, NAMT changed their name to American Music Therapy Association
(AMTA).
There are 70 AMTA-Approved schools throughout the United States that offer a degree in Music Therapy.
Records indicate that students have come
to LSH from Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Kansas,
New York, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri,
Utah, Oklahoma, Arizona,
Canada, New Mexico, and Mississippi since 1976. Following completion
of their academic program,
each student is required to complete a 6 month internship at an
AMTA approved facility.
Once the internship is completed, the student must pass an examination
to become
a Music Therapist Board Certified(MT-BC).
The Music Therapy department at LSH is part of the Activity Therapy
department. Lanette Kellie,
MT-BC, has been the Clinical Training Director for the program since
November 1983.
Records indicate that 54 students have been involved in the training
program since June of 1976.
Previous Clinical Training Directors include Ray Glover, Mavis Mahlberg,
Clara Goodrich,
Judith Wineland, Patricia Schmidt, and Bethany Smith. There are
5 previous Music Therapy
interns currently employed in the Activity Therapy department at
the hospital.
Once a student arrives on the LSH campus, they spend two weeks in
Orientation. Following
their orientation, they spend the next nine weeks observing, co-leading,
and leading
Music Therapy groups, under the direct supervision of the Music
Therapy staff. The last half
of their internship is spent functioning as a music therapist, participating
in treatment team functions
and providing 18-20 hours of music therapy per week. They are observed
several times per week
by the Music Therapy staff in order to assure quality treatment
for the patients.
The student is not paid or offered a stipend during their 6 months
at LSH. However,
the hospital does provide living quarters and meals during the entire
internship for the student.
At the end of the six months, the student is given an opportunity
to provide specific feedback

to the staff as an evaluation of their experiences during their
six month internship. This feedback is
used as data to assess the need for performance improvement opportunities
within the Music Therapy
department and within the hospital.
