In keeping with the concept that: "The best mental health care is fostered in a learning organization," Larned State Hospital continues to expand its internship programs for students interested in learning more about the care and treatment of the mentally ill. In addition to having the opportunity to work with some of the finest mental health professionals in Kansas, student interns are also afforded the opportunity to attend on-sight workshops which are conducted by many nationally known mental health professionals. These workshops are provided at no cost to the student.

Interns at Larned State Hospital receive no stipend during their internship at the hospital however, free living quarters and free meals are available to students. Students also have access to the hospital’s "Employee Fitness Room" which has been recently remodeled and updated with state of the art exercise equipment. In addition, numerous social and recreational opportunities are available in the area.

At the beginning of the student internship each intern receives orientation to the hospital prior to being assigned a unit. With the wide variety of treatment provided by Larned State Hospital student interns are afforded the opportunity to work with patients ranging in age from children to geriatric. Most internships are designed to allow the student to rotate throughout the various programs at the hospital including the forensic program which is the only one of its kind in the State of Kansas.
