Larned State Hospital..... a facility for learning!

One of the "little known" facts about LSH, is that LSH is not "just" a state psychiatric
hospital, it is also a facility for learning! This article is one in a series about a few of
the exciting learning experiences taking place at Larned State Hospital.

One of the major recipients of at least a portion of this "learning" at LSH are
Student Nurses.  LSH offers on-campus learning experiences for Student Nurses
from seven affiliating Colleges/Universities located throughout Kansas.

Affiliating colleges/universities visiting LSH for various educational experiences include:

These students spend from 1 day to several days depending upon the learning needs
identified by the college/university program. Many of these student nurses/instructors also
spend up to five days lodging in the Larned Community.

LSH learning experiences include tours of the hospital campus, lectures/ informational
presentations by various professional staff at LSH, Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility
Panel staff/ offenders, and most importantly observing and interacting with LSH and
State Security patients and clinical staff on various treatment units.

Participating students/instructors are very appreciative of the vast array of unique
psychiatric clinical experiences available at the hospital. They are often very
complimentary of staff who take time from their very busy schedules to assist the
students in the many educational opportunities available at LSH.  In a recent visit,
a Director of one of the nursing programs reported in 20+ years of experience,
she had never seen staff so cooperative and willing to
accommodate the learning needs of students!

At the conclusion of the learning experience, students are given an opportunity to
provide specific feedback to staff as an evaluation of their experiences. This feedback is
used as data to assess the need for performance improvement opportunities within the hospital.

This valuable experience for learning is also utilized as a recruitment tool to invite interest in
exploring career opportunities as "future" LSH employees and Pawnee County citizens.
