Youth Services
Children Treatment Program
The Children's Unit, located in the
ATC Building at Larned State Hospital,
provides services for children ages 6 through
12 years of age. These children must meet the criteria for admission
to LSH as defined by Senate Bill 469. A Mental
Health Center screening is required by law to authorize admission to
a State Hospital. Admission to the Children's Unit
may be voluntary by parents or legal guardian, or involuntary by the
court system. A written application for voluntary
admission or a court order for the involuntary admission is necessary.
Adolescent Treatment Program
Severely emotionally disturbed adolescents typically between the ages
of 13 and 17 years can be admitted to the
Adolescent Unit with Community Mental Health Center approval via the
following avenues:
1) voluntary by parent or legal guardian (when bed space is available);
2) court ordered mental illness evaluation;
3) court ordered psychiatric care and treatment following mental illness
adjudication.
Otherwise, adolescents can be admitted as follows:
1) court ordered Child in Need of Care Evaluation per District Court Order
when bed space is available;
2) court ordered Pre-Disposition Evaluation per District Court Order following
juvenile offender
adjudication when bed space is available.
Westside School
Westside School consists of grades kindergarten through high school.
The school is fully accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education
and is staffed by a faculty certified in their fields as well trained and
approved in special education
(i.e. learning disability, behavior disorder, educable mentally handicapped,
and gifted). The school operates under a
contractual agreement between Larned State Hospital and Fort Larned
School District U.S.D. #495. Westside provides
the services of a certified speech and language therapist and contracts
for the services of school psychology and other
required programs in special education. The junior high self-contained
classroom is housed in the ATC Building and the
senior high is at Volunteer Building, which is equipped to meet the special
needs of the physically handicapped.
Adult Services
Admissions Unit
The Adult Admission Unit is a 19-bed facility located in the Hospital
Building at Larned State Hospital. Services are
provided for persons within the central and western counties of the
state of Kansas designated to be within the
boundaries of the Larned State Hospital catchments area. Admission
to the hospital may be voluntary or involuntary.
A Mental Health Center screening is required by law to authorize admission
to the State Hospital. In addition, a written application for Voluntary
(psychiatric only) admission or a court order for the involuntary admission
is necessary.
Detox admission do not have to be screened at the time
of admission.
Adult Treatment Program
(ATC West, ATC South)
The Adult Treatment Program is implemented on the Adult Treatment Center
(ATC West and the ATC South) Units.
Each Unit serves both men and women. The Adult Program is a general
psychiatric treatment setting which provides
services to individuals from 59 counties in Kansas assigned to the
Larned State Hospital catchment area. The patient
must be 18 years or older, screened by a Community Mental Health Center
and admitted on a voluntary
status or on a court commitment.
