Early
Head Start
In 1998, the Kansas Legislature
approved a state Early Head Start initiative as a joint endeavor
with the federal government. Early intervention through high-quality
programs enhances
children’s development during their formative years, enables parents to
be better caretakers and teachers to their children, and helps parents meet their
own goals, including economic independence. Comprehensive services provided to
program participants include mental and physical health, nutrition, social services,
parental involvement, services for children with disabilities, and child care.
There are 13 early childhood development programs across the state, designed
to
serve 825 children, from birth to age four.
