General Assistance Program
05/2003
Español
The General Assistance (GA) program provides cash benefits
to persons who are disabled. The program serves those who do not qualify
for other state or federal programs. It is a short-term program. Persons
may only receive GA for 24 months. The person must apply for Social
Security disability benefits. In some cases, a person may work with
Vocational Rehabilitation to become employed.
The MediKan program provides medical services for anyone receiving
GA.
You must have low income and resources. Some resources are exempt
including:
The home where the individual lives
Assets under $2000
A car
GA has a set standard for cash payments. The standard will vary. It
is based on the county where the person lives. The cash payment amount
also depends upon the number of people in the household. GA allows
only 80% of the total need. In some cases this may vary. The chart
below shows the most cash a person may receive. These amounts are for
persons having no other income and living alone.
