Funeral Assistance
The funeral assistance program provides funds for low-cost funerals for some public assistance recipients. To receive funeral assistance, the deceased must be a cash, medical, or food stamp recipient at the time of death. This includes persons who had pending applications for assistance, and who ultimately were approved for assistance for the month of death.
Resources of the family or estate of the deceased, and other assets at the time of death shall not exceed $2,000. In order to be considered for eligibility for a funeral assistance benefit, the total cost for the following funeral expenses may not exceed $2,500 before sales tax:
Preparation of the body
Purchase of a casket
Transportation within the trade area
A service
Expenses for a crematory if cremation is selected
The request for funeral assistance must be made within six months from the date of death or from the date the deceased is released by the county coroner.
